Biography:

Professor Gift Matope is the current Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science. Prof Matope is a holder of DPhil (Veterinary Bacteriology, UZ, 1999), MVSc (Veterinary Microbiology, University of Queensland, 2001) and BVSc (UZ, 1992) degrees. In 2008 he joined the department of Paraclinical Veterinary Studies as a veterinary microbiology lecturer and went through the senior lecturer (January 2011) and associate professor (2014 to date) grades. Prof Matope is also chair of key committees in the Faculty (Faculty Research, Curriculum Review, Laboratory Management, Safety& Quality Assurance) and also represented the Faculty on a number of UZ committees (Publications, Staff Development and Welfare, Quality Assurance, Student Disciplinary and Safety Committees). He was involved in organizing the UZ exhibitions at the Research and Intellectual Exposition (RIE) where he was the co-leader of the “Research Groups” cluster.Before joining UZ, Prof Matope was employed by the Central Veterinary Laboratory where he went through the ranks of Veterinary Research Officer, Senior Veterinary Research Officer to that of a Principal Veterinary Research Officer. Prof Matope specializes in veterinary bacteriology and mycology and has vast experience in the field of laboratory diagnostics, having worked for about nine years at the Central Veterinary Laboratory and for 12 years in the current department. He has also taughtveterinary public health, zoonoses and research methods and biostatistics to undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary students. Prof Matope has a passion for research, especially on zoonoses andfood safety focusing on infection biology, laboratory diagnostics, disease modeling and molecular epidemiology. Over the years, he has established collaborative research with colleagues from other institutions, both within and outside the country [(e.g. Nowergian Programme for Development, Research and Higher Education (NUFU) Collaborative Research on Zoonoses and Environmental Toxicology and the Research Platform-Production and Conservation in Partnership (RP-PCP)]. To date, Professor Matope has over 30 publications in peer reviewed international journals.
