Faculty: Medicine And Health Sciences
Department: Laboratory Diagnostic and Investigative Sciences
Research Category: Health and Medicine
Biography:

After graduation with a BSc degree in Medical Technology, I was employed by the Ministry of Health as a Medical Technologist. I was the first person in the country with such a qualification. In 1983, the ministry, in liaison with USAID, recommended me for a postgraduate scholarship to do an MSc in Pathology at Ohio State University. In 1985, the University of Zimbabwe appointed me as a Senior Medical Laboratory Scientist in the then Department of Haematology. In 1987, with support from the then Dean and deputy Dean, the late Dr Gwavava and Prof Tswana respectively, the Department of Medical Technology was set up at the University of Zimbabwe, College of Health Science, after consultations with key stakeholders. The Department came into existence during the pick of HIV/AIDS pandemic. There was need for strengthening the diagnostic capacity of laboratory staff. The Department was capacitated by support from DANIDA AIDS Prevention Programme, which put in place a strong physical infrastructure to the point where it became the biggest unit in the Faculty. My stint at the University has given me extensive experience in teaching, research and administration, where I have been able to extend my knowledge to HBMLS, MBChB and Postgraduate students. I have also been able to get extensive administrative work by Chairing Departments for more than 18 years. At the same time, I have been able to supervise Part IV research projects and publish a number of research articles. Some have resulted in price awards at both local and international forums.
