Biography:

Dr. Gwatirera Javangwe PhD, is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychology at The University
of Zimbabwe. He completed his PhD in Psychology with the University of Zimbabwe in 2017. He has
a Masters of Philosophy in Psychology, a BSc Psychology Honours Degree, all from the University of
Zimbabwe. He is a Forensic Psychologist with more than15 years experience in applied research in
the areas of evidence-based assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders. He
has a keen interest in offender assessment, treatment and rehabilitation. He also has keen interest in
health psychology, community psychology, developmental psychology, economic psychology and
transport and traffic psychology. He has extensive experience in the design of studies and
interventions. He is a member of over 15 international professional associations including the African
Research on Ageing Network, International Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers (IATSA),
Association for Treatment of Sexual abusers (ATSA), International Union of Psychological science,
International Society for the Study of Behavioural Development (ISSBD) and National Coordinator of
ISSBD, Association of Black Psychologists (ABPsi). He is a member of the Medical Research Council
of Zimbabwe, National Health Research Development Committee, Research Board of the University of
Zimbabwe and University of Zimbabwe, Research Ethics Committee. He has vast administrative
experience, as a teacher, Headmaster, lecturer and Chairperson of the Department of Psychology. He
is also Board member of several local and international organizations. He was Vice Chairperson of
Women and Law in Southern Africa, Zimbabwe, a Founding member of Pan African Psychology
Union, a continental board and representative organisation of all psychologists in Africa. He was the
Technical Team Leader in the ZACRO Baseline study on the Needs of Female Inmates in
Zimbabwean Prisons. He is also the Technical Advisor of the Steering Committee on the Needs of
Female inmates in Zimbabwe. He was an Advisory Board Member to The Zimbabwe Prisons and
Correctional Service- Mashonaland Region (Harare Metropolitan, Mashonaland Central, and
Mashonaland West Provinces of Zimbabwe). He was also an Executive member of the Zimbabwe
Psychological Association. He is the immediate past President of the Association of University
Teachers, University of Zimbabwe. Dr Javangwe is the Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Prisons and
Correctional Service-Harare Metropolitan Province, Advisory Board. He is also the Vice Chairperson of
Zimbabwe Association of Organisations Working with Prisons. He is the Programme Coordinator for
the BSc Honours Degree in Forensic Psychology and Criminology and Master of Science in Forensic
Psychology and Victimology. He is a member of the International Association for Correctional and
Forensic Psychologists, a member of the International Association of Police and Criminal
Psychologists and a National Association for Treatment of Offenders (UK).
